Nevertheless, large businesses are not the only companies being targeted, within the last 12 months of those companies suffering security breaches 68% were medium businesses. A notable medium-sized company that recently suffered a phishing attack is the Flagship Group in Norwich who saw the personal data of some customers and staff being compromised.
Phishing attacks
One of the most common attacks that are continuing to increase is phishing attacks, with 86% of security breaches experiencing this type of attack. Phishing involves malicious emails being sent to a target appearing to be from a reputable source, and if opened it can install malware and collect sensitive information from the recipient’s computer. These attacks have made it much easier for security breaches to be able to take place if the user doesn't have the appropriate services to protect against them.

The extent of cyber security threats has not diminished. In fact, this survey, the fifth in the series, shows that cyber attacks have evolved and become more frequent. Almost half of businesses (46%) and a quarter of charities (26%) report having cyber security breaches or attacks in the last 12 months. Like previous years, this is higher among medium businesses (68%), large businesses (75%) and high-income charities (57%)[footnote 1].
