The wait is over, Apple revealed its 13th generation of iPhone yesterday during a virtual event from its campus in Cupertino, California. Here is what you need to know:

Like last year, the new range is comprised of 4 phones – the iPhone 13, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max.

The new phones present many significant improvements from the previous versions and a completely new filming feature.

Design

The front of the new handset is very similar to its predecessor, the iPhone 12, with the same flat edges. The most visible change is on the back, where the cameras have been rearranged to be diagonal.

Colours

The iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini will come in five colours. These include pink, blue, midnight (black), starlight (aluminium white/silver) and red.

The iPhone 13 Pro colours and iPhone 13 Pro Max colours include graphite, gold, silver, and sierra blue.

Size

The phones screen sizes remain the same: 5.4 inches for the Mini, 6.1 inches for the iPhone 13 and 13 Pro and 6.7 inches for the Pro Max.

Screen

The screen offers a brighter OLED display on all models however the Pro and Pro Max both include a Super Retina XDR display and ProMotion that delivers adaptive refresh rates of up to 120Hz, allowing more seamless scrolling, animations, and gameplay.

The screen also offers more “usable” space as the new cameras have enabled to reduce in the “notch” on the front of the devices, making the black bar 20% smaller.

Battery

The devices' bigger batteries will allow them to last an extra 1.5 hours to 2.5 hours of use.

Camera

The iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max feature the most advanced dual-camera system ever in an iPhone. They also have a new 3x zoom telephoto lens, and an ultra-wide camera that enables macro photography for the first time, this feature allows shooting small objects from a distance of just 2cm.

Filming feature

The most noteworthy innovation comes from the new cinematic mode that allows amateur filmmakers to achieve much more professional videos with something called "pull focus" which automatically shifts focus on objects and creates dramatic effects.

Chip

The new devices are equipped with an upgraded bionic A15 chip which the brand says is 50% faster than the competition and will help users to accomplish much more demanding tasks.

Connectivity

Apple introduced 5G on its handsets last year with the iPhone 12. For its second generation of 5G phones, Apple has unveiled even faster 5G connectivity to maintain its domination on this segment, with millions of users still left to upgrade to 5G.

Storage

The iPhone 13 range will come with double the storage capacity of its predecessor—a minimum of 128GB, along with 256GB and 512GB options.

There is even a 1TB storage option for the first time on an iPhone, on the Pro line.

Sustainability

Ecology is a growing concern, Apple made sure that their new phones are in tune with this increasingly important trend. The phone uses many recycled materials - including antenna lines made from plastic water bottles.
